Celebrating International Women’s Day is celebrating all the women who, throughout time, fight and march for a fairer and better world. It is celebrating the strength and courage of all that exists not just today, but every day. It’s celebrating their art and their music, with 8 songs from the female artists that will take the stage at the 15th edition of NOS Alive. Lizzo, girl in red, Tash Sultana, Rina Sawayama, Angel Olsen, Yaya Bey, Carolina Deslandes, and Bárbara Tinoco are some of the confirmations that are part of the lineup for this year’s edition.
Lizzo – Special
There really is something ‘special’ about Lizzo. And in this song, where the focus is on the importance of liking ourselves just as we are, supporting each other and taking care of our self-esteem, Lizzo emerges as the superhero that she is and reminds us how special we are. “In case nobody told you today / You’re special (special) / In case nobody made you believe / You’re special (special)“. A hymn for today and for every day.
girl in red – we fell in love in october
Between themes about desire or depression, Girl in Red has become a queer icon for gen z through the honesty and wit with which she tells her stories. “If my songs can normalize being queer, that’s awesome!” she says. And it is in this normalization, in this honesty and in the relationship that you manage to create with the public, that we find truth and a safe space to be who we want to be. And that is empowerment in the fullest sense of the word.
Tash Sultana – Can’t Buy Happiness
Tahs Sultana is the definition of a one-person show. Tash and the instruments he plays meet on stage in a unique harmony that is capable of filling rooms all over the world. It is in Terra Firma, their latest album, that explores this harmony with a dose of mythicism and spirituality while living life in its truest form – in its true self. And this message resonates throughout the album, in a plea for everyone to live their truth.
Rina Sawayama – STFU!
A cry of revolt for all the people who have suffered some microaggression in their lives, in a song that takes Rina Sawayama to explore new styles with nu-metal and rock influences. “This song is the perfect embodiment of pure inner anger and the humor of how ridiculous this is. It’s been really cathartic.” STFU is really the hymn and cry for all these situations.
Angel Olsen – Woman
Over 6 years old, the album
MY WOMAN
remains an exponent of Angel Olsen’s career. 10 songs that materialize in a control of her own narrative, in a world that so often tries to take the reins. “I dare you to understand / What makes me a woman,” sings Olsen in “Woman,” in a song that makes us question patriarchy, sexism, and the role of women in a struggle for equality.
Yaya Bey – big daddy ya
Yaya Bey is one of the most exciting storytellers on the current R&B scene and her latest album,
Remember Your North Star
explores the kaleidoscopic nature of women, specifically black women, at their core. Addressing themes of misogynoir (misogyny targeting black women), exposing generational trauma, carefree romances, parental relationships, female empowerment, and self-love, Yaya Bey shows us how the path to healing is not linear-there are many lessons to be learned along the journey.
Carolina Deslandes – Saia da Carolina
This is the “Carolina who questions patriarchal and religious education and who doesn’t fit into that mold.” Released today, March 8, 2023 on International Women’s Day, Carolina Deslandes carries the flag of struggle with a serrated fist and an anthem that echoes everywhere in her latest single before the release of her album that arrives this Friday, March 10. Fist clenched high, we sing in one voice: “Beware of Carolina / Who comes with fist clenched / Carolina’s skirt burned in the middle of the bush / Carolina’s story is that she now wears a suit.
Bárbara Tinoco – Chamada Não Atendida
Bárbara Tinoco is one of the most relevant composers of the new generation of Portuguese music, and in “Chamada Não Atendida” she tells us the story that we often see in real life: the woman who stopped accepting the minimums of a toxic relationship she was in. It is an anthem of overcoming that lingers in the ears and echoes empowerment in every chord.
Along with this list, we have also created a special playlist for International Women’s Day, in a celebration of the music created by these artists. In July, the meeting is scheduled for the 6th, 7th, and 8th at Passeio Marítimo de Algés. Guaranteed
