The blazing star that is Genesis Owusu burst onto the scene with the release of his debut album, Smiling With No Teeth, in March 2021. The album won the Triple J Album of the Year award and four titles at the ARIA Awards, including Album of the Year, Best Hip Hop Release, Best Independent Release, and Best Cover Art. It garnered support from Triple J and BBC Radio, as well as global acclaim from critics and influencers, including The Needle Drop, NME, Line of Best Fit, The Guardian, Teen Vogue, Rolling Stone, The Australian, ICON, and many others.

With an impressive résumé, Owusu embarked on his first international tours in the US, Europe, and the UK, performing at venues like Berghain in Berlin, Primavera Sound in Barcelona, Lollapalooza, and supporting acts such as Thundercat, Khruangbin, and Glass Animals. He also made his US late-night television debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Owusu closed out 2022 supporting Tame Impala and performing at festivals like Spilt Milk, Lost Paradise, and Falls Festival. In 2023, he embarked on a series of performances, including a sold-out show at the Sydney Opera House, supporting tours for Paramore and Bloc Party in the US, including dates at Madison Square Garden.

Earlier this year, STRUGGLER was released, which already garnered Album of the Year, Best Independent Release, and Best Hip Hop/Rap Release awards at the 2023 ARIA Awards, with Owusu dominating the nominations. The album was featured as the Triple J Feature Album and earned Owusu the Australian Live Act of the Year award from the station in 2023. Shortly after, Owusu embarked on a 24-date tour across the United States, UK, and Europe, including sold-out shows at legendary venues like Heaven in London, Cafe De La Danse in Paris, and HOLE44 in Berlin, before bringing his acclaimed live show back to Australia in December.

Recorded between the USA and Australia, “STRUGGLER” is an 11-track narrative journey that Owusu simply describes as “a story about a cockroach, running and running, trying not to be stepped on by God.” Immersed in mystery and metaphor, the story is a celebration of the stubborn, inspiring will of human survival. “Through pandemics, wildfires, and wars, we’ll still find a way to get to tomorrow, and I find that beautiful,” says Owusu.

July 12 marks the Australian artist’s debut at NOS Alive’24 when he takes the WTF Clubbing stage.
